In both ways, this historic Camino de Santiago is known, the most followed long-haul route after the French Way.
The oldest Camino de Santiago. Its origin dates back to the discovery of the Apostle's tomb, when Alfonso II the Casto pilgrim from Oviedo, capital of the young Astur Kingdom, to contemplate the newly discovered tomb.
It was the Primitive Way that went to the Holy Place through Tineo, Fonsagrada and Lugo through the mountain range of the Cantabrian Mountains. It was not long before his pilgrim subjects realized that, following the path of the Cantabrian coast, the journey was much less hard; the Coast Road was born.
The complete Road is commonly used for the entry of pilgrims from continental Europe who enter the peninsula through Irun or for those who, by sea, arrive on Basque, Cantabrian or Asturian land, following westward to the shelter of the Dangers of Muslim troops.
With the consolidation of the lands gained to the morisma in Castilian lands and already free of dangers the Navarre and Castilian kings, aware of the importance of the Way, create boroughs and condition the route with sufficient infrastructure (bridges, hospitals, inns, ...) diverting the Way through interior lands, towards the French Way, the busiest and route of all the Ways.
