THE WAY OF SANTIAGO FRANCÉS, FROM LEÓN TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

The Camino de Santiago includes the majority of European pilgrims, as described in the 12th century by the Codex Calixtinus. In Spain it is presented from two main routes that cross the Pyrenees: one does it through the port of Somport to descend towards Canfranc and Jaca (Aragonese Road), or through its surrounding valleys of Ansó (Hechó) or Tena (Sabiñánigo); and the other through the port of Ibañeta and down towards Roncesvalles and Pamplona (Navarro Road). Both main routes join Puente la Reina (Navarra) with the name of "Camino de Santiago" to march west towards Logroño, Burgos, Carrión de los Condes, León, Sárria and Santiago de Compostela.

The Way of Saint James was born upon discovering the tomb of the apostle James in Compostela, becoming in the tenth century a fundamental route in the consolidation of the Christian kingdoms against Muslim domination.

An important spiritual path, popularized by Codex Calixtinus in the Middle Ages that attracted, and still attracts, millions of pilgrims from around the world.

Declared World Cultural and National Heritage by UNESCO in 1993 and Prince of Asturias Award for Concord in 2004, it is a journey you can never forget.
