The Dels Hams caves are 10 million years old, but the human being has been enjoying their beauty only since 1905 when they were discovered by a speleologist Don Pedro Caldentey Santandreu (1886-1950), who carried out excavations looking for onyx, a valuable mineral commonly found in this area.
In 1910 he had provided light to the cave in order to illuminate it before there was electricity in the town of Porto Cristo. By using a windmill with a waterfall, a dynamo and a water tank he was producing electricity for 16 hours in order to visit the cave.
