Bellver Castle is a Gothic-style fortification in Mallorca. It is located around three kilometres away from Palma de Mallorca. It was built at the start of the fourteenth century on the orders of King James II of Mallorca. It is situated on a hill, 122 metres above sea level, in an area surrounded by woods, where you can look out over the city, the port, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and the Pla de Mallorca; indeed, its name comes from the ancient Catalan “bell ver”, which means “beautiful view”. One of its unique features is that it is one of the few castles in Europe with a circular floor, and is also the oldest in this category. It currently belongs to the Palma City Council, and inside you can find the Palma History Museum, which is open to the public.
